Under a mountain, Tenuta di Trinoro is an estate with different soils. Some plantings are over 25 years old. Having developed large root systems, they now translate the soils’ distinct tastes. After observing certain grapes coming to the winery with different flavors over so many harvests, we decided to bottle 3 parcels of vineyards separately, under their own labels.

Campo di Camagi (100% Cabernet Franc) is a 1.5-hectare vineyard where vines have grown on broken quartz and limestone, long before we planted: densely, in a thin layer of soil, at 600 meters (2,000 feet) above sea level. The plants struggled for room until they reached a balance: roots having filled the ground, each vine has the same number of leaves in its share of the air.

A cold-weather year. The wines at Trinoro are deep, with a tight texture. The fruit holds back in preparation for a long aging. Campo di Camagi is always a profound, concentrated juice. Camagi 2014 is eloquent, black as night.

Details

The 2014 Campo di Camagi is the most complete wine among the three single vineyard expressions of Cabernet Franc now being highlighted by vintner Andrea Franchetti. Fruit yields from this two-hectare vineyard are lower in Campo di Camagi with six clusters per vine compared to eight to ten clusters per vine in the other plots. The site shows blue clay under the surface with gravel and small stones at the top. This soil composition makes it very difficult for the plant's root system to penetrate. As Franchetti puts it: "This wine is made from very stressed fruit." Of course, in wine speak, this is a very good thing, resulting in a wine that shows bigger density, opulence and overall concentration. This Cabernet Franc opens to a blackish color and thick aromas that raise heavily and slowly from the glass. The vines are 25-years-old. Balckberry and dried cherry segues to sassy spice and tobacco. This is a wine for the cellar.
